A Husband and Wife in the Midst of the Meningitis Outbreak

All over the news people have been talking about the horrifying meningitis outbreak that may affect as many as 1,400 people in the United States. The meningitis is linked to a steroid that was created by the New England Compounding Center to diminish back pain in uncomfortable patients. The men and women all over the United States received the shot and immediately felt their back pain relieved. Yet for many, the relieving medication was just the start of a more difficult battle. The New England Compounding Center realized later that a fungus in the steroid had the ability to create the onset of fungal meningitis in victims. So far, the meningitis outbreak has killed 24 people. The illness causes the lining of the brain and spinal cord to swell, and can suddenly kill a victim if he or she is not treated quickly.

In the recent weeks since the outbreaks, many news stations have covered the story generally, listing the amounts of affected individuals. Recently, Yahoo! News used a new spin on the meningitis story to tell the personal tale of a husband and wife who were changed forever because of the tragedy. A Michigan man named George Cary is mourning the loss of his wife who has already passed away as a result of the illness. The couple went in for spinal injections together and was later told that the steroid was linked to the multistate outbreak.

Lillian Cary died on September 30th at the age of 67, one of the first victims. Now, George has been diagnosed with the illness as well. He told the Associated Press that he has been feeling better. George has been in the hospital receiving intravenous treatment to battle the illness for three days, and says that the doctors will monitor his kidney and liver function to see if he responds to treatment. More than 300 people have been diagnosed with the illness in recent months. According to medical experts, the illness can take as long as 4 weeks to show symptoms.
